How to split the POS bill — Detailed guide

Follow these steps to split a customer's bill directly from the Menivo POS system. Make sure the POS module is activated and that you have created at least one staff account before you begin.

1

Log in to the POS system

Open the Menivo POS interface and log in with your staff or manager account. Make sure you are assigned to the correct table or order before continuing. If you haven't set up staff yet, check out the guide how to create and manage staff in the POS system for full details.

💡 Pro tip: Each staff account has specific permissions. Make sure your role has access to the bill split function. The restaurant administrator can configure these permissions from the POS settings panel.
2

Select the table or active order

From the main POS screen, identify the table for which you want to split the bill. Tap the table number or the active order from the list of open orders. You will see the full list of ordered products, with the corresponding prices and the bill total.

💡 Pro tip: If your restaurant uses the KDS system, check beforehand that all products have been marked as prepared before initiating the split process. Learn more about what KDS means and how it works.
3

Access the "Split Bill" option

Within the active order, look for the "Split Bill" button or menu (usually represented by a splitting icon or explicitly labeled). Tap this option to open the bill splitting module. The interface will present the order items in a clear view, ready for allocation.

💡 Pro tip: If you don't see the split option, check that in the advanced POS module settings the feature is enabled for your subscription type.
4

Choose the POS bill split method

The Menivo POS system offers you two main ways to split the POS bill:

Split by items: You manually select each product and assign it to a specific customer. This method is ideal when each person at the table wants to pay for exactly what they consumed.

Split into equal amounts: You enter the number of people and the system automatically divides the bill total into equal parts. Perfect for groups who want to split the bill evenly, regardless of what each person consumed.

💡 Pro tip: Splitting by items is recommended when there are large differences in consumption between customers (e.g. one customer ordered an expensive bottle of wine). This method avoids dissatisfaction and simplifies the payment process.
5

Allocate the products or amounts to each customer

If you chose split by items, tap each item in the order and assign it to a customer "slot" (e.g. Customer 1, Customer 2, etc.). Unselected products remain in the main bill until they are allocated. If you chose split into equal amounts, enter the number of people and confirm — the system will automatically calculate the amount per person.

💡 Pro tip: You can add or remove customers from the split process even after you've started allocating, without having to start over from scratch. The system automatically recalculates the remaining amounts.
6

Select the payment method for each portion

After the bill has been split, the POS system will allow you to process payment separately for each customer. Tap the first customer and select the desired payment method: cash, bank card, voucher or any other method configured in the system. Repeat the process for each portion of the split bill. For a complete list of available options, check out the guide payment methods in POS.

💡 Pro tip: If a customer pays with cash and is owed change, the POS system automatically calculates the change and displays it on screen, eliminating manual calculation errors.
7

Confirm payment and close the bill

After all portions of the split bill have been paid, the POS system will automatically mark the order as completed. The fiscal receipt or receipt can be printed separately for each customer, depending on your receipt printer's configuration. The table is now free and can be assigned to a new customer.

💡 Pro tip: Check that the receipt printer is correctly configured in the POS settings to avoid situations where the receipt doesn't print immediately after payment confirmation. The complete guide how POS works also covers peripheral configuration.

Why use the bill split feature in POS?

Splitting the bill isn't just a convenience for customers — it's a professional tool that improves your restaurant's operational flow.

🚀

Shorter service time

Processing multiple payments simultaneously at the same table significantly reduces checkout time, freeing up the table faster and increasing customer turnover. Combined with an optimized digital menu, you improve the entire customer experience.

😊

Improved customer experience

Customers appreciate the flexibility to pay separately, especially in business groups or groups of friends. This feature reduces awkward situations related to splitting costs and increases overall satisfaction at the end of the meal.

📊

Accurate financial reports

Each split transaction is recorded separately in the system, giving you accurate data about preferred payment methods and customer consumption behavior. This data helps you make better business decisions.

🔒

Security and traceability

Every POS bill split action is recorded in the system log, associated with the staff account that performed the operation. This ensures complete transaction transparency and reduces the risk of financial errors or discrepancies.
